You have stumbled across Bask, the new and improved hex archive of Alena @ Moonflower. The critters I hex work in versions 3, 4 and 5 of Petz, a retro PF Magic virtual pet game. My plate is pretty full at the moment, so this website serves mainly as an archive of my hexing work, and not so much for trades. Though if we know each other well, or you are a voucher holder, please feel free to ask about a trade :)

If you have lost a hexie from me, please don't hesitate to contact me for a replacement; if the file isn't in my sent emails folder, it will probably squirrelled away on a backup flashdrive somewhere. If all else fails, I can make a new hex from the same file :3 Message me on Whiskerwick, the RKC or moonflowershadows {at} hotmail {dot} com.

This section is intended for people who want to get into hexing, but don't know quite where to begin. There are six things you'll need to obtain before starting to hex (apart from the Petz program itself). I use all of these, I personally couldn't hex without them.

1) Download Pet Workshop, a specially designed tool for hexing, from here.

2) Download LNZ Pro, a petz-specific file editor, from here.

3) Grab a spreadsheet program, i.e. Microsoft Excel or the free Apache OpenOffice, available here.

4) Locate a texture chart, ballz chart, and colour chart. You can find your own, or use these:

♥ Grab a simplified texture chart (I'm not sure who this is by) here, OR a comprehensive one from here.
♥ Grab a ball chart here.
♥ Grab a colour chart here. (Be aware that colours 10 to 149 are the only ones that can have a texture overlaid on them, like the patterned fur on unhexed catz and dogz, versus the flat colour of say, the eyeball or iris. Other numbers will appear flat colour.)

Once you've got these programs installed and charts on hand, you're ready to begin :)

Two Essential Steps BEFORE You Start Hexing

1) Backup. Always backup.
Before you start modifying any files in your game, make a copies of all your breedz. Copy the catz and dogz folder, if you have them both. You'll need to locate these folders; something along the lines of \Petz 4\Resource\Dogz (or Catz), wherever you installed them. Check your Program Files for PF Magic or Ubisoft folders, if you didn't pop them in a custom place like your Documents folder. Pop your backups in a separate, safe folder, because you're going to need them again one day. You'll only have to do this step once, as long as you don't ever alter these files.

2) Collapsing Variations
This makes hexing easier. When you bring a pet out the adoption center, the individuals that you get can be different colours and have different markings, etc. This step deletes all the variants in the file, so you can just edit the one. When you're hexing, especially in Pet Workshop, you only edit one variant of the file, and the others remain the same, which makes things very inconvenient.

There is a way to do this in LNZ Pro, but Pet Workshop is far easier. Once you've selected the file you wish to edit, open the breed file in Pet Workshop. On the menu bar, select 'Breed', then select 'Collapse all variations'. Select 'yes' from the pop-up box. Click save, and you're done with this step! Remember to always do this when you start work on a new file to save you some pain down the road.

Bask was established on the 4th August, 2014. My hexie site was previously called Wattlebark, (est. 18th September, 2009), but the site was frozen for some unknown reason, and I decided to make a change.

I chose the name 'Bask' when I was reading through very old tutorial pages from my main site, Moonflower. While they were never published because I didn't think the tuts were good enough, I'd listed some ideas on how to come up with site names. 'Bask' was the random word I'd picked from a dictionary to use as an example, and I still really liked it, so Bask was born.

In 2020, I began moving Bask from its former home at Webs.com to Neocities, as the free hosting was closing in June 2021. I decided to drastically change the format of the site, moving away from iframes, to allow for a less cramped experience.
